In recent years, domestic abuse has surged into the public consciousness like never before. From high-profile cases in the media to ground-breaking documentaries and campaigns, the conversation around domestic violence is louder and more urgent than ever. Yet, behind the headlines and hashtags, there are countless individuals silently suffering, desperate for support, understanding, and a way out. This is where you can step in.
At WAVES Counselling Project, we are on the frontlines of this crisis, providing vital counselling services to survivors of domestic abuse. But we can’t do it alone. We need passionate, dedicated trainee counsellors to join us in this mission. If you’re training to become a counsellor and want to make a real, tangible difference in people’s lives, we invite you to apply for a placement with us starting February 1st.

The Growing Need for Counsellors in Domestic Abuse Support
Domestic abuse is a pervasive issue that affects 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men in their lifetime, according to the Office for National Statistics. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the problem, with lockdowns trapping victims in unsafe environments and leading to a sharp rise in abuse cases. Charities like Refuge reported a 700% increase in calls to their helpline during the pandemic, highlighting the desperate need for support services.
But the need doesn’t stop there. Domestic abuse leaves deep emotional scars that can last a lifetime. Survivors often struggle with trauma, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem long after they’ve left abusive relationships. This is where counselling plays a crucial role. It provides a safe, non-judgmental space for survivors to process their experiences, rebuild their self-worth, and begin to heal.
At WAVES, we believe that every survivor deserves access to high-quality, compassionate counselling. We also believe in the power of nurturing the next generation of counsellors. As a trainee with us, you’ll gain invaluable experience working with survivors of domestic abuse, supported by a team of experienced professionals who are committed to your growth and development. Here’s what makes a placement with us unique:
